Description

The terrace of houses at 1-12 Nelson Place dates from the 18th century. While the facades are brick, it is believed that the underlying structure of some, if not all, of the houses is timber-framed. The houses are built of red brick, with the ground floors of numbers 8, 10, and 11 stuccoed, and numbers 1-4, 6, and 7 painted brick. They have brick eaves cornices and tiled roofs. The houses are two storeys and have attics and basements; number 8 is taller than the others. Most windows are sash windows, though some are casements, and some retain their original glazing bars. The doorways are set within moulded architrave surrounds, with flat hoods above. Number 8 has a hood supported by brackets, and a fanlight, which are likely later additions. The doors are mostly six-panel doors, although some now have glazed panels. These listed buildings are part of a group value context with Shipyard House and Nelson Cottage on Bath Road, and with Alma Cottage on Grove Road.
