Description

North Charford Manor House is a large house demonstrating several phases of construction, originating from a 16th-century east-west structure. A north wing was added in the 17th century, followed by an 18th-century westward extension that now forms the main front facade, and a large replacement extension to the east in 1891, following a fire, with alterations in the early 20th century. The walls are primarily brick in English bond, with a plinth, cambered arches and relieving arches. Diaper patterns are visible in a south end stack, while stone banding and admixture are present in a massive north end stack. The main, west-facing elevation is stuccoed. The roof is tiled.

The symmetrical front features a tall central three-storey-and-attic section and single-storey wings. The gable above the central section has a semi-circular section punctuated by a circular window. Parapets drop in curves from the side walls of the central section to meet the wing parapets. A Venetian window sits above a first-floor three-light sash, complemented by three-light sashes in each wing. A classical four-bay porch has been infilled with glazing. Distinctive half-spandrels at first floor level are adorned with large circular patterns having fluted segments. The building behind the facade retains a vernacular form with irregular features. The late 19th-century east wing is in a William and Mary style and is two storeys and attic in height.

Inside, there are three doorways closely spaced between the original block and the north wing, two of which are Tudor in style. The north wing contains remnants of a timber frame within its later walls.
