Description
Ivy Bank and The End House are an early 19th-century building complex, with Ivy Bank purportedly built in 1827 and The End House shortly afterward. They combine to form an L-shaped structure. Ivy Bank, the southern portion of the L, is constructed of colourwashed brick with a hipped tiled roof, wide eaves with paved brackets, and large rear stacks. It has two storeys and four windows, presenting a symmetrical facade. The central two bays are recessed, featuring a ground-floor trellised verandah with a tented roof supported by three decorative open iron piers. The outer ground-floor windows are early to mid-19th century canted full-height bays with tented roofs. The first floor has sash windows with glazing bars. The rear facade is irregular, with single-storey outshuts, and generally has sash windows with glazing bars. The End House, forming the north arm of the L, is joined to the rear of the east side of Ivy Bank. It is built of similar materials to Ivy Bank but has a slate roof. The End House has two storeys and two windows. Its facade includes two full-height ground-floor canted bays (one within the outshut), and predominantly features sash and casement windows with glazing bars. A rear six-panelled door with a moulded architrave is located in the angle of the āLā. The building was reportedly the home of Sir Nicholas Tindall from 1842 to 1846, who served as the local Chief Justice of Common Pleas. The End House contained a courtroom and ante-room; the former featured a circular stained-glass window with heraldic designs.
