Description
Westover is a large house built in 1897 by architect Arnold Mitchell, designed in the Norman Shaw tradition. The building has an irregular plan and is constructed of red brick, with stone and stucco dressings, and the upper storey is tile hung. It features a wide eaves cornice and a gabled tiled roof. The north facade, which faces the road, has two advanced gabled wings with a recessed hall in between and a low porch at the northwest corner. The house is of uniform height, with sections that are 1½, 2, and 2½ storeys tall, and it spans approximately 9 bays in width. The windows are casement style with leaded glazing. The recessed wing includes pedimented dormers with low relief moulding in the tympana, and the windows below extend the full height of the building, featuring mullions and transoms. The chimney stacks have an interesting design. The south facade has square bays under gables and a small two-storey verandah. Inside, there is a panelled hall and some stained glass windows. The building is also included in Muthesuis's Das Englische Hans, Volume 2.
