Description
The Old Toll House is a mid to late 18th century building located in the garden of the former Crown Inn, now known as the Monkey House, and is set diagonally to the road. It is two storeys high with one window on the east side. There is a mid-19th century lean-to extension with one window. The building is constructed of red brick and has an old tile roof that is half-hipped at both the north and south ends. The first floor and the gable of the north front are tile-hung, except for the area below the cat-slide on the west side. The windows are two-light casements, with a single light in the south extension. There is one window on the north side. A plank door is located to the right of the east front, and another door is to the right of the south extension. The east front features a tall chimney that rises between the main part of the cottage and the lean-to extension. This extension has a tiled roof and is slate-hung in the half gable and above on the south wall of the main part. The old toll gate was situated approximately 150 feet east of the cottage in front of the Inn.
