Description
The Church of St Mary the Virgin is a parish church built in 1822 by J Hannaford, with the chancel added in 1873 by B Ferrey. It is constructed of brick with golden limestone dressings and has a slate roof. This church follows the Commissioners style and features an added apsidal chancel, a 4-bay nave, a northeast vestry, and a west tower. The half-octagonal chancel has lancet windows on three sides and buttresses at the corners. The nave is distinguished by large lancet windows with buttresses in between, and diagonal corner buttresses topped with gabled finials. The vestry, which consists of two sections, has two square-headed two-light windows on the east side and a pointed door on the west end. The west tower, which has two stages and corner buttresses, features a large west doorway with a pointed door in a square-headed frame, adorned with quatrefoils in the spandrels and a louvred lancet above. The crenellated parapet adds to its character. The interior remains quite plain, much as it was originally built.
