Description

Castle Bridge Cottages date from the 16th century, with later additions and alterations in the 18th century and modern times. They likely originated as two farmhouses, which were subsequently subdivided and joined, with a projecting central section and a 18th-century addition to the south end, accompanied by a return wing. The cottages are two storeys in height, and have attics to numbers 4, 5, and 7. The roofs are primarily red tile, with a central section of pantiles, one flat-roofed dormer over numbers 4 and 5, and two gabled dormers to number 7. The front elevation largely features exposed timber framing in the upper part, with studs and braces, all jettied with small arched braces to the main posts. The infill is red brick, except for the first floor of the central section, which is tile-hung. Most windows are modern casements. There are two original, plain boarded doors. The later southern section has red tile roofing, hipped and half-hipped red brick walling, a broken band to the first floor, cambered openings, modern casements, and doors. The northern part of this range has been heavily restored.
