Description

The Church of St Michael is a Grade II* listed building with origins dating back to the 13th century, with significant additions made around 1500 and a full restoration in 1877. Originally, the church consisted of a chancel and nave from medieval times, which were later enhanced by the addition of a western tower, a north aisle, and a north chapel. The 1877 restoration reduced the width of the aisle and introduced a new arcade.

The church features red tile roofing, with pantiles over the aisle. The walls are generally rendered with stone dressings, although Tudor brickwork is present on the gables of the chapel and as dressings to the tower walls, which are made of brownstone, also used in the restored aisle. The windows are mostly modern Perpendicular style, with one older window located on the south side of the chancel. The tower has original openings with stone frameworks and brick relieving arches. It is topped with a crenellated brick parapet and supported by massive diagonal corner buttresses with flush brick quoins, stone bands, a rubble stone base, and a high plinth. The west door of the tower is bricked up.

Inside the church, notable features include a fine late 15th-century font, a bench dating from around 1500, an ancient wooden chest, a wall brass, and several wall monuments.
