Description
The grandstand and jockey quarters at Tweseldown Racecourse are a racecourse facility built in the late 19th century. Constructed from red brick with yellow brick dressings and topped with a slate roof, the building features an L-shaped layout. The grandstand is two storeys high, while the jockeys quarters are a single storey. The grandstand has a hipped slate roof adorned with terracotta cresting, a square wooden ventilation louvre, and a lead pyramidal roof topped with a metal weathervane. The northwest elevation includes a set of steps flanked by stepped end gables and square pyramidal piers with pyramidal roofs, along with a wooden partition for the first-floor steps. The rear elevation showcases a central chimneystack, wide windows, and yellow brick dressings.
To the north, there is a one-storey building with a gable end featuring carved bargeboards, a clock face, and wooden verandahs on the west and east sides, which have curved bargeboards, wooden piers with arched windbraces, and a canted bay to the north. Inside, the building contains a 19th-century wooden corner fireplace, dado panelling, and a kingpost roof. The L-wing to the south matches the main structure in materials and features, with windows, cambered doorcases, and a weather porch topped with a finial. The interior of this wing also has plank dado panelling and wooden fireplaces. Racing at Tweseldown began in 1855, initially featuring flat racing, but it is now used for point-to-points and dressage. The grandstand and jockey quarters are notable for being part of a small late 19th-century country racecourse that remains unusually unaltered.
