Description
This is an early 18th-century house, originally an alehouse, with smaller additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of painted brick, topped with a clay tile roof having gabled ends, and features brick gable end stacks with set-offs. The building is arranged in a T-shape, comprising a two-room front range and a large, single-room rear wing. The front range includes a central entrance passage, with the right-hand room serving as a parlour and the smaller left room initially used as the alehouse bar, both rooms being heated by fireplaces in the gable ends. A kitchen with a gable-end fireplace and staircase is located within the rear wing, which also has outshuts on its southwest and northeast sides, the latter being integral with the front range. A single-storey outbuilding from the 19th century, formerly a cobbler's shop, is situated at the left (southwest) end of the front range. The front of the house features two windows on each floor, a brick platband at first-floor level, and three-light casement windows with glazing bars, the ground floor windows being arched. A 20th-century timber porch covers the central doorway. The rear wing has outshuts set into its angle on either side, and 20th-century glazed conservatories have been added to the rear. The small left-hand room contains a chamfered axial beam with straight-cut stops, exposed unchamfered joists, and a large fireplace with a moulded timber chimneypiece with brick jambs. The larger right-hand room features a chamfered axial beam with cyma stops, ceiled joists, and a 20th-century chimneypiece. The kitchen in the rear wing includes a roughly chamfered axial beam, exposed unchamfered joists, a fireplace with a chamfered timber bressumer and shelf, moulded plank doors to an integral outshut, and to the staircase.
