Description

Barclay House is a villa dating to circa 1820, located on Vicarage Road, Yateley. It is an example of a symmetrical ‘Grecian’ style building. The house has two storeys and three windows, with a low-pitched slate roof featuring wide eaves and a thin cornice supported by slender curved brackets. The walls are stuccoed, with a fillet below the eaves and a projecting band at sill level. The ground floor has plain architraves to French windows, separated by four semicircular niches. Sashes are set in reveals. A full-width raised verandah runs along the ground floor, supported by six slender cast-iron columns bearing a thin cornice. At each end of the verandah are square pavilions with openings on both the front and interior sides, topped with a blocking course above a simple cornice, a plain frieze and panelled pilasters, all standing on a plinth that is continuous with the verandah floor. Three steps, flanked by urns, provide central access to the verandah, with wrought-iron diagonally-framed rails between the columns. The architectural style continues severely around the sides, incorporating a smaller two-storey extension set back on the west.
