Description

The George Hotel is a Grade II* listed building, originally constructed in the 15th and 16th centuries, with a license dating back to 1547. This large U-shaped late medieval timber-framed structure features an 18th-century front. It has two storeys and a roof covered with red tiles, which includes a gable at the east end that is tile-hung above a brick dentil band, adorned with decorative barge boards. The exterior is finished in painted brickwork with rubbed flat arches, stone cills, and a plinth, along with a slightly projecting centre and east wing. The windows include sashes in exposed frames, with four old sashes on the first floor and others that are Victorian.

At the east bay before the gable, there is a Greek Doric porch supported by two columns and two pilasters, featuring an architrave above a wide opening with double flush-panelled doors, all set on stone steps. The building also has two projecting wrought-iron sign brackets, one of which has a decorative terminal. The rear extensions display exposed timber framing and more recent single-storey outshots with painted brick infill and casement windows, some of which are old. Inside, there is a massive chimney at the west end, along with painting on plaster on the first floor and a carved fireplace on the ground floor in a room with panelled walls, all dating from the 16th century.
