Description
Wintney Farm Barn, located to the west of the farmhouse, is a Grade II* listed building associated with a Priory of Cistercian nuns founded around 1190. The barn dates from the 15th and 16th centuries and features a large structure with seven bays. It has a central projecting entrance on the west side, flanked by aisles. The main roof is made of corrugated iron and gabled at each end, while the aisles and entrance are covered in red tiles.
The barn is constructed with a massive timber frame that rests on a low red brick wall, primarily in header bond. It includes a Queen Post with arch braces supporting tie-beams. From the top plate to the purlins, the tie-beam from the aisle eaves to the middle of each post carries a straight strut to a purlin. The main walling consists of two heavy verticals for each bay, with three lighter posts in between, side girths, and double-curved strutting at intervals, featuring red brick herringbone infill. The aisle has an open frame with one bricknogged section.
The south gable is weatherboarded, except for the lower wall, which is made of red brickwork in English bond. The north gable is similarly boarded above a bricknogged exposed frame. Additionally, there is a small brick and tile extension to the east of the north-east corner, which incorporates an old brick wall on its north side.
