Description
Great Crabthorn is an 18th-century shared house located on Old Street in Hill Head. The building features a facade of red brick with grey headers and a tiled mansard roof. The northern part of the house was originally symmetrical, with three windows and a central door, while a southern section of similar size was added later and has only one window. The house stands two storeys tall with an attic, which includes four dormers. The windows are late 18th or early 19th century three-light casements with glazing bars, except for the central and southernmost windows. A large porch with a dentil cornice enhances the entrance. Inside, there is an earlier core that includes 17th-century brick fireplaces and some panelling. At the rear, there is a lower two-storey cross wing with a half-hipped gable end. Great Crabthorn is part of a group that includes Crabthorn Farm Cottage, Crabthorn Farmhouse, and its granary, all of which are located on Crabthorn Farm Lane in Hill Head, with the granary being a building of local interest.
