Description

Crabthorn Farm Cottage and Crabthorn Farmhouse are a pair of buildings located on Crabthorn Farm Lane, dating back to the 17th century. The cottage, which is timber framed, features red brick herringbone infill and has a half hipped tiled roof. It stands two storeys high and has three windows with late 18th century to early 19th century casements, although some leaded glazing from the 17th century to early 18th century remains. Inside, the cottage showcases exposed timber framing, beams with stop chamfers from the 17th century, and numbered joists. It also has an early form of central heating, with a hot air duct leading from the top of a former bread oven to a vent in the bedroom wall.

The farmhouse, facing east, is constructed from stone rubble and red brick, also topped with a half hipped tiled roof. It is two storeys tall and has three casement windows, except for a modern window above the door. The entrance features a centre door in a timber framed porch with a hipped roof. A 17th century cruciform chimney stack is located on the south wall and is tile hung. The roof slopes down to a single storey height on the rear, or west facade. Inside, the farmhouse boasts fine exposed timbers, beams with 17th century stop chamfers, and early 17th century panelling.

Crabthorn Farm Cottage and Crabthorn Farmhouse are part of a group with No 80 (Great Crabthorn) on Old Street and the former granary at Crabthorn Farmhouse, which is also of local interest.
