Description

The orangery at Cams Hall is a late 18th-century structure located on the south side of Portchester Road in Fareham. It is built from Beaulieu cream brick in Flemish bond and features a slate roof, which is largely collapsed. The central section and the top of the right-hand wing have also mostly collapsed. Originally, the orangery was a single storey with seven bays, flanked by pedimented side wings. The central portion includes rusticated end pilasters adorned with flint bands and sash windows, each topped with a semi-circular tympanum. The side wings are taller, featuring rectangular gauged-brick-arched recesses with round-arched recesses above, which have a string course and blind oculus, along with dentil corniced pediments.

On the left return, there are three bays with a stone and brick plinth. From the left, there is a doorway, a window, and a blind window on the ground floor, with a window and two blind windows above. All openings have gauged flat brick arches, with stone sills for the windows and blue header brick infilling for the blind windows. The eaves are stepped and dentilled. The right return has two bays; the left bay features a broad pilaster with stone imposts and the springing from a former arch, while the right bay has a round-arched doorway with a stepped impost band. The orangery was storm damaged and derelict at the time of inspection in October 1989.
