Description

A screen wall and attached former farmhouse, outbuildings, and yard wall form the east side of Home Farm yard at Cams Hall. The farmhouse and a southern outbuilding likely date to the late 17th century, altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. The screen wall is from the late 18th century, while a second outbuilding and yard wall were constructed in the mid- to late 19th century. The structure combines rubblestone with red brick dressings, red brick in English bond, and red brick in Flemish bond. Cream-colored Beaulieu brick in Flemish bond was used for the late 18th-century work, and the 19th-century work is of red brick in Flemish garden wall bond. Plain tiles and Cumberland slate roofs are present, along with some replacement corrugated iron.

The farmhouse is located at the north end of the range and stands two storeys high with a three-bay facade. A one-story outbuilding with a loft occupies the south end of the range, featuring three bays. A former two-bay cartshed sits between them. In the late 18th century, the entire range was refronted with cream brick to enhance the approach to Cams Hall. The east elevation features a screen wall with a blind round-arched arcade, some arches incorporating blind oculi. A central panel contains three niches with architraves (partly obscured by a 20th-century toilet block, which is not of special interest). Flanking the panel are quoined panels with rectangular recesses and formerly taller sections with square recesses at the upper level. A round-arched doorway with a two-light dormer sits above the wall, and a hipped-roof farmhouse addition rises above the wall at the right end with two six-pane windows to the first floor.

The west elevation exhibits a corrugated iron roof over the outbuilding on the right and a central boarded door in a brick-quoined opening with a flat brick arch and hatch door above. Flanking windows are present in similar surrounds with later glazing and arches, and a brick eaves course. The former cartshed has two collapsing double-board doors and a collapsed roof. A mid-18th-century wing added to the left of the farmhouse has a partly collapsed canted front with some remaining 12-pane sashes. The original three right-hand bays have a late 19th-century central canted stairwell with four-pane sashes and a door in the return. Wide segmental-arched windows with 19th-century windows are present to either side, with late 19th-century windows breaking the eaves above.

Inside, the southern outbuilding has east-side openings mimicking those on the west side, but masked by the 18th-century screen wall. The farmhouse’s 17th-century section includes a large-scantling chamfered beam with stepped triangular stops, while the 18th-century wing features panelling. The property was derelict at the time of inspection in October 1989.
