Description
The Church of St Andrew originated as a small Benedictine Priory in the early 12th century, retaining features typical of a convent rather than a parish church. The building includes an aiseless nave that merges into a long chancel, a western tower, a north porch, a south chapel added in 1800, and a north vestry built in 1911. It has a red tile roof that is only slightly higher than the nave. The walls are made of stone rubble, coursed at the south chapel, and there are two notable Norman windows along with several lancet windows. The large east window features geometrical tracery. The tower consists of Norman stages topped by a tall but plain Perpendicular stage. Inside, the church has large window reveals, numerous wall monuments, an Easter Sepulchre, a piscina, sedilia, a King-post roof, and a Victorian font.
