Description

This is a First World War memorial, with later additions commemorating the Second World War, located within the churchyard of the Priory Church of St Andrew the Apostle. The memorial is constructed from limestone and features metal lettering. It takes the form of a Latin cross with chamfered edges, standing on a small square pedestal. The pedestal rises from a broad octagonal plinth, which itself is set upon a three-stepped base. The dedications and names of the fallen are inscribed within recessed panels on all sides of the plinth. The south face bears a dedication reading “THEIR NAME LIVETH/ FOR EVERMORE/ TO/ THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF HAMBLE/ AND ALL WHO LIKE/ THEM DIED IN THE/ SERVICE OF THEIR/ COUNTRY DURING THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919.” The names of those who died in the First World War are inscribed on the flanking sides. A further dedication has been added on the north side, “TO/ THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF HAMBLE/ AND ALL WHO LIKE/ THEM DIED IN THE/ SERVICE OF THEIR/ COUNTRY DURING THE/ 2ND GREAT WAR/ 1939-1945,” with more names added to the remaining sides of the plinth.
