Description
This gas street lamp, located outside No. 52 on Kings Road in Alton, dates from the mid to late 19th century and was converted in the 20th century. It features a cast-iron lamp standard with a moulded pedestal, a fluted tapered shaft, and a ladder rest at the top. The lamp itself seems to be a later replacement. Originally, it was made under a Webbs patent and designed to burn gas from the local sewage works, but it has since been converted to burn North Sea gas.
