Description

Peters Barn is a house, originally two cottages, dating from the early and late 16th century, with restoration and an extension added in the early 20th century. It is timber-framed with a tile roof. The building began as a late medieval hall, to which a 16th-century extension was added to the west. The south front has two storeys and an irregular arrangement of four windows. The west end of the roof is hipped and features a gablet, while the rear roof has a catslide section, now disrupted by two gabled, tile-hung upper rooms. A shafted stack is also present. The exposed timber frame reveals different phases of construction, with brick and stone infill. The windows are 20th-century casements, and the doorways are plain, one of which is filled in. Inside, an early Tudor wood-framed fireplace is present. The chimney breast appears to be attached to the exterior of the original frame, backing onto a substantial brick fireplace with a Tudor arched opening in the later addition. These fireplaces may be contemporary, built within a smoke bay.
