Description
The building at 26, 28, and 30 Normandy Street comprises a shop, formerly shops and houses, incorporating sections dating back to the early 17th century (numbers 28 and 30) and an 18th-century structure (number 26). The entire building was refronted and reroofed around 1830-40, with a large 20th-century extension to the rear that is not of special interest.
The front facade is stuccoed with a slate roof, and the side elevation is painted brick. It is two storeys high with four windows. The upper floor features four 12-pane sash windows set within moulded architraves. The ground floor has a 19th-century shop front with a deep fascia on the left side and 20th-century doors on the right at number 26. Numbers 26 and 28 each have a single curved bay and plain doorcases within moulded surrounds. The rear elevation is brick at ground floor and stuccoed at first floor, with casement windows.
Internally, number 28 features a 17th-century 2-inch chamfered beam with lambs tongue stops on the ground floor. Number 26 has an 18th-century ceiling beam with 1-inch chamfers and run-out stops. The first floor of numbers 28 to 30 displays deep tie beams and spine beams with lambs tongue stops. The building has two early 19th-century, four-plank doors and square framing with jowled posts. The roof was heightened in the early 19th century; while the rafters are now quartered softwood poles, early 17th-century roof timbers remain, including principal rafters, collar rafters, and close studding within the left-hand truss. A fireplace in number 30 dates from the early 19th century and includes an iron basket grate with a reeded surround.
