Description
The building is a station constructed in 1859, designed by Sir W Tite. It remains largely unaltered and was built for the 'Portsmouth Direct' line of the London and South Western Railway (LSWR). The station features brick walls in stretcher bond, with some areas rendered and others displaying stucco details, including a plinth and a first-floor band. The roof is low-pitched and covered with slate, hipped on each side.
The west and east elevations are symmetrical, featuring a two-storey gabled center with two windows, flanked by single-storey wings, each with one window (the south side has an additional later window). The narrow upper openings have been filled in, as have those in the wings. There are narrow sash windows on either side of the central entrance, which consists of double doors topped with a fanlight.
