Description

The Church of St. Lawrence is a Grade II* listed building that dates back to the Norman period and was later modified in the medieval era. It underwent restoration in 1864 by J. Colson, who retained many original features. The church comprises a nave with north and south aisles, a chancel with a north vestry, a western tower, and a porch. The roof is tiled, featuring gables that are nearly equal in height for the aisles. The walls are constructed of flint with stone dressings, and the windows display plate and bar tracery, complemented by diagonal buttresses at the corners and a plinth.

The porch and vestry were entirely built in 1864, but a notable feature is the Norman door, which showcases chevron and tooth carving above recessed columns with cushion caps. The west tower includes small openings and a west window positioned above a Perpendicular doorway, topped with a low pyramid roof. Inside, the north arcade dates to around 1180, featuring round arches and cylindrical columns with cushion caps, while the south arcade, constructed in 1864, is made of marble piers with foliage caps. The church contains several floor slab monuments, primarily from the late 17th century, wall monuments from the 18th century—including a Roubiliac effigy of Sir Thomas Hooke, created around 1750 but dated 1677—along with several painted hatchments and a Royal Coat of Arms.
