Description
The Church of St Martin is a Grade II listed building located in East Woodhay. It was built in 1823 by Billing, with the chancel added in 1849 and the porch in 1887, on the site of an ancient church. The church features a Gothic (decorated) chancel and porch, characterized by steep tile roofing and flint walls with stone dressings, including traceried windows and corner and intermediate buttresses. The wide aisleless nave and western tower are constructed of red brickwork, with slender buttresses and a low-pitched slate roof. Inside, the nave has an open scissors truss roof with cusped spandrels. Notably, the north side of the chancel houses a monument from the old church dedicated to Edward Goddard (1724) and his wife, framed by a classical marble structure that includes a pediment, coupled Doric pilasters, a pedestal, and a central case supporting an urn, with figures in contemporary dress on either side.
