Description

41 Kingsclere Road is a cottage dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, likely extended in the late 18th century or early 19th century. It is constructed of white painted flint with brick dressings and features a thatched roof with half-hipped ends. The building has axial and end stacks with brick shafts.

The plan consists of three cells, with the right-hand room divided axially. The original structure likely included a central hall with a gable end stack and a smaller, possibly unheated parlour on the right, which now has a stack at the right end. A small unheated service room on the left may have been added in the late 18th or early 19th century.

The exterior is one storey with an attic and has a four-window southeast front. It features 19th-century two and three-light casements with glazing bars, and there are eyebrows in the eaves over two attic windows at the center and left. The doorway is to the right of center and has a chamfered wooden doorcase with a 20th-century glazed door, now enclosed within a large late 20th-century glazed porch. The rear has no extensions.

Inside, the central room (hall) contains a chamfered axial beam with curved stops and a large fireplace, with its jambs and lintel plastered over. The right-hand room is ceiled and has a 20th-century chimneypiece. The attics are also ceiled, but the center chamber has exposed purlins and one straight windbrace.
