Description

The Menagerie Pond Pavilion is a garden pavilion built in 1727 by James Gibbs for the Third Duke of Bolton. It is situated along the long axis of the lily pond and features a modern date plaque. The symmetrical facade on the north-west side is open at the center, supported by two columns and flanked by side pilasters. Each side bay has one window that illuminates a room with a doorway centered on the sheltered wall. The pavilion has a hipped slate roof, with a slightly projecting centerpiece that includes a pediment.

The facade showcases the fully moulded Doric Order, complete with a modillion cornice running across the front and a frieze with triglyphs above the columns and pilasters. The walls are finished in stucco, with a plinth leading to two steps in front of the open center, which features a floor of white stone flagstones and dark blue diagonal squares at the joints. The windows are adorned with eared architraves and cills on brackets, and they contain sashes set within reveals. The inner doors consist of two large flush panels framed by moulded architraves. The outer walls are made of painted brickwork, and the modillion cornice continues around the entire building.

Inside, the two rooms each have a paved floor similar to that of the center, original wall panelling, panelled door soffits, a moulded cornice, and a small fireplace featuring a re-used 17th-century fireback that bears the Bolton crest and the date --87.

This pavilion is recognized as a good-quality early 18th-century garden structure and is listed in the National Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Interest.
