Description
The Church of St. Michael's, rebuilt in 1865 by J Colson, is a Gothic Revival church situated on a medieval site, incorporating some older features from the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries. The church includes a chancel with a small north vestry, a nave with a north aisle, a south porch, and a timber-framed bell turret. It has an old tile roof, a shingled spire, and battered sides to the bell turret, along with two gablets on the north aisle. The exterior is constructed of flint with stone dressings around the openings and features stepped buttresses. Notable windows include one lancet in the chancel, coupled lancets beneath a circular light in the west gable, and a three-light traceried window on the east side, with coupled lights elsewhere. Inside, the chancel retains its original form from around 1300, featuring two old window reveals and a fine 14th-century piscina. The nave arcade includes two arches made from old materials, supported by two drum columns with cushion caps and moulded bases. The octagonal font, sourced from Popham, has a 15th-century bowl set on a later base. A massive Queen Post truss, which is arch-braced, supports the belfry.
