Description

Upton Grey House is a Grade II listed building dating from the 18th century, with alterations made in 1907 by Ernest Newton. This large, two-storey house with an attic is L-shaped and features several additions, creating fairly regular facades on the important north and east fronts. The south side contains a complex group of small, separately roofed units.

The east front includes a later angular two-storey bay on the north side and a single-storey block attached to the west end, which also has a bay on its south side, resulting in a window arrangement of three, one, one, three. The house has a hipped slate roof with two dormers that have segmental tops. The walls are finished in stucco, with stone coping along the parapet, a first-floor band, and a plinth. The windows are sashes set in reveals, with the central part featuring three lights.

The north elevation has two storeys and a window arrangement of two, one, four. It also has a slate roof and a wooden moulded cornice with coupled brackets that break over the projected entrance, which is adorned with a pediment. The stucco walls include a first-floor band that is discontinued above the entrance, with cills and a plinth. The windows are sashes in reveals, featuring outer wooden architraves.

The wide doorcase is elaborately designed with delicate mouldings, a thin cornice supported by two console brackets, and panels above the narrow side windows and door, as well as panels beneath the side windows. The doorway is arched and contains a six-panelled door. The other elevations of the house reflect later periods, resulting in a patchwork of several attached units in a vernacular style.
