Description
The Court House and Wallby is a building located on the south side of the Village Street in Pevensey. It dates back to the early 13th century when Pevensey was a member of the Cinque Ports and had its own Corporation until 1886. The building originally served as the Court Hall or Town Hall on the first floor, with a lock-up on the ground floor. A tablet on the building notes that "From Norman days the Mayor, Jurats and Communalty held their courts here." While it is likely a medieval structure, it was refaced with cement in the 19th century.
The building features a tiled roof and stands two storeys tall, with two windows facing north. At the first floor level, there is a porch accessed by 10 steps, which contains an 18th-century door with six fielded panels. The north gable end includes an oriel window. Wallby, the section at the back to the south, is an 18th-century addition that has two windows facing west.
