Description
Smuggler's Cottage is an outbuilding dating from the 18th century, with alterations from the 19th century. It was likely built as an outbuilding for Tipsey Cottage and later used as a cottage in the 19th century; it is now used for storage. The original 18th-century timber frame has been re-walled or infilled with brick in the 19th century. The building features a tall, plain tiled gambrel roof with a tiled gable at the south end, along with a brick gable and chimney stack at the same end.
It is a single-storey structure with an attic and has a single unit plan that runs parallel to the street. The central entrance doorway is framed in heavy timber and has a threshold that is lower than the pavement. There is a 19th-century vertical board door with strap hinges, and to the left of the entrance, there is a 19th-century sash window with a central vertical glazing bar. A casement window with glazing bars is located in the north gable. The timber frame is exposed in the south gable, showcasing the principal beam, end rafted couple, and raking struts to the collar.
At the rear, there is a central doorway with a rectangular fanlight. Inside the attic, there are three bays with collars supporting the gambrel purlins and exposed upper rafters. A small plaque inscribed "SMUGGLERS COTTAGE. The smallest house in Sussex" is mounted on the entrance doorway. The cottage has group value with Tipsey Cottage.
