Description
Wellingham House is a private house built around 1800 on the site of an earlier building for the Rickman family. It underwent extensive remodeling between 1955 and 1971 for Ian Askew by architect Raymond Erith. The house is constructed of red brick, tile, and timber, featuring a hipped slate roof with large stacks and dormers. It has two storeys and attics, with three windows facing east and two windows on the north and south sides. The wide eaves are supported by a bracket cornice, and the sash windows include glazing bars.
The entrance porch is adorned with Doric columns and a pediment, leading to a round-headed doorway with a semi-circular fanlight. The south front was remodeled by Erith to include a wing that was a later addition to the original house. Part of this wing was demolished in 1955 to make way for a library, which is accessed through a new octagonal ante-room decorated with Chinese wallpaper from Panshanger. In 1960, Erith added two new single-storey wings at the front of the house, clad in wood and painted to resemble stone. Each wing's central portion projects and features a pediment, with two round-arched windows on either side of a central niche, topped by a central stack. These wings created larger drawing and dining rooms in styles from the 18th century and around 1830, respectively. A trellised verandah was added to the older part of the south-west front as part of this remodeling. In 1971, a first-floor dining room was added, featuring tile hanging, along with a conservatory and trellis outside the library.
