Description

This is a row of three dwellings built over shops, dating to approximately 1800 with extensions shortly after, and some shop fronts altered in the early 20th century. The building is constructed of painted brick with concrete tile roofs of a shallow pitch, with a slight change in pitch over number 3. The roof is hipped to the right and has a rendered stack; there is another stack above the angled section of the facade of number 3. It appears number 1 was originally built, and number 3 was added later as two separate units, angled to align with the adjoining building at number 5.

The building is three storeys high and has four bays. The central section of number 3 is angled, with iron ties visible at the upper level. The end bays on the right have been blocked. The windows are segmental-headed 12-pane sashes. The ground floor on the left has remains of an early 20th century shop front, with a decorative lintel over a glazed door, and a later 20th century shop front with a Georgian-style door. Number 1 features an early 20th century double shop front with decorative spandrels to the windows, and a pillar to the right of the entrance supporting a bressumer above the ground floor opening. There are two steps leading to a half-glazed door.

The north-west return (right return) has one window to each floor, with 16-pane sash windows above a shop window with a pilaster surround, and double doors with moulded panels. An early 20th century shop front, similar to those on Bridge Street, was inserted on the Chapel Street elevation, blocking an earlier shop front. The interiors have not been inspected. The building forms part of a group with The Bridge Hotel and number 5 High Street.
