Description
The gazebo at Wellingham House, located to the south-west of the house, dates from around 1800 and is contemporary with the main building. This octagonal structure has two storeys. The ground floor is constructed of red brick, with the south side featuring weatherboarding and a seat beneath a canopy. The entrance, located on the east side, consists of a round-headed archway flanked by stone Doric columns. Inside, there is a grotto lined with shells and a domed roof that has a pendant in the centre. The first floor is also faced with weatherboarding and has a slate roof topped with a weather-vane shaped like a gilded pheasant. Four sash windows with intact glazing bars provide light, and the entrance to the upper room is on the north side, accessed by wooden steps from a raised bank. The interior of the upper room features contemporary panelling, and each window contains a rectangle of differently coloured glass, representing the four seasons—spring, summer, autumn, and winter—by casting seasonal effects on the garden when viewed through the coloured panes.
