Description

RINGMER WELLINGHAM LANE 1. 5206 The gazebo at Wellingham House to the south-west of the house TQ 41 SW 10/605B 20.8.65. II

  1. Contemporary with the house. Circa 1800. Octagonal building of 2 storeys. The ground floor is of red brick, the south side weatherboarded with a seat. placed beneath a canopy. The entrance is on the east consisting of a round-headed archway flanked by stone Doric columns. Inside is a grotto lined with shells with a domed roof having a pendant in the centre. The first floor is faced with weatherboarding. Slate roof surmounded by a weather-vane of a gilded pheasant. Four sash windows with glazing bars intact. The entrance is on the north side by means of wooden steps from a raised bank. The interior of the upper room has contemporary panelling. In the centre of each window is a rectangle of different coloured glass said to represent spring, summer, autumn and winter by giving the effect of each season on the garden when the coloured pane of glass is looked through.
