Description

East Hill House is a late 18th and early 19th century building. The east front, which faces the street, is stuccoed with a parapet and three storeys, displaying three windows. The windows are mostly sash windows with glazing bars, accompanied by Victorian area railings. A plaque commemorates that Prince Augustus, Duke of Sussex, Lady Augusta Murray and Colonel D'Este resided here in the summer of 1794. The west elevation, which overlooks the town, is more notable, also stuccoed with a parapet and a new tiled roof. It rises four storeys and has five windows, incorporating two full-height, segmental bowed bays, each with three-light sash windows and intact glazing bars. A doorway is centrally positioned on the first floor, accessed via twelve steps with original iron railings, reflecting the difference in ground level between the east and west sides of the building. The doorway is ornamented with fluted Ionic pilasters, a modillion pediment, a pulvinated frieze, a rectangular fanlight with intersecting glazing bars, and a six-panel door. Central sash windows are present on the floors above.
