Description
Cavendish Place, numbers 1 to 24, is a row of houses built between 1851 and 1855, though their design reflects a later Regency style, appearing as if they belong to around 30 years earlier. The buildings are four storeys high with a basement, each having a single window. They are stuccoed and feature curved bays on all floors except the top, which also incorporates the basement, with a cornice above the bays. Each floor of the bays contains a three-light window. A cornice and parapet are present above the top floor, and iron balconies are affixed to the first floor. Originally, the first-floor windows were hooded, and remnants of these hoods remain at numbers 8, 9, 15, and 19. Glazing bars are missing. The doorways are round-headed. The end and central houses project slightly, accentuated by long and short quoins. The easternmost houses have small pediments above their parapets. Modern alterations include the insertion of additional windows into the facade on some floors. Numbers 22 and 24, now located at the rear of the Pier Hotel, have been modified with a restaurant front on the ground floor.
