Description
Byways is a house that dates from the late 16th century and 17th century, with later 20th-century additions. It features a timber frame with painted brick infill and an old tiled roof that is gabled at both ends, forming a T-plan. The north front has a 20th-century extension made of painted brick with false timbering, incorporating some older materials. This extension is located in the internal angle of the T and includes an entrance door beneath a flat hood, along with scattered 20th-century lead casement windows. To the left of the extension are two framed bays from the late 16th century, which have a single 4-light 20th-century lead casement window on the ground floor. To the right, there is 1½ framed bays at right angles to the extension, featuring a 2-light 20th-century leaded casement window on both the ground and first floors. A later brick chimney is positioned on the ridge, and there is a single-storey 20th-century extension at the north gable end with false timbers. The building likely started as two cottages, and the interior reveals some original framing.
