Description

New Mill is a water mill and millhouse that has been converted into a restaurant. It dates back to the 15th century, with alterations and extensions from the 17th, 19th, and late 20th centuries. The building features a mix of timber framing with painted brick infill and sections made entirely of painted brick. It has an old tile gabled roof, with the mill section being half-hipped and an irregular plan. The structure includes parts that are two storeys high and parts that are one and a half storeys. A large chimney stack is located at the east end of the house.

On the north front, the house is on the left side, with the upper part being timber framed from the 17th century. There is a chimney on the left side of the gable end, with a 20th-century door to the left of the chimney in a lean-to porch. Above this door, there is a two-light casement window, a small window in the timber-framed section, and a three-light leaded casement window on the ground floor.

The west front of the mill building features two gabled dormers with 20th-century casement windows on the left of center, a boarded door to the right of center, and a three-light casement window on each side of the door. The right side of this section is built over the mill stream, which runs through two-foot brick arches. To the right, on the opposite bank of the mill stream, there is a higher section with painted weatherboarding and a half-hipped old tile roof. Further to the right, there is a 20th-century L-plan single-storey dining room extension that is not of special interest.

Inside, many timber frame members are exposed, and there is a large inglenook fireplace. The mill wheel, gears, and machinery have been fully restored and are in working order, enclosed behind a glass screen.
