Description
The Old Post House is a hall house that has been converted into a cottage. It dates back to the 15th century and was altered in the 20th century. The structure features a timber frame with painted brick infilling and an old tile gabled roof. It has a rectangular plan consisting of four framed bays and stands two storeys high. To the left of the ridge centre, there is a rectangular chimney stack with diagonal pilasters. The building has scattered 19th-century leaded casement windows. The original four-centred moulded door frame, which faces the road, is now enclosed by a 20th-century hipped lean-to porch.
Inside, the house boasts a very fine timber frame, a redundant crown post roof, long curved windbraces, and a large 17th-century inglenook chimney that has been inserted in the former screens passage, with the service end located on the left. There are carpenter's marks in the correct sequence, scribed with a race tool featuring a circular symbol, which is unusual for Berkshire.
