Description

The cattleshed at Newland Farm dates from the early 19th century. It features brick rear and end walls, with weatherboarding on the elevations facing the yard, and has a hipped tile roof at the south end. The structure is an L-shaped range, consisting of six bays in the north range and three bays in the south range, forming part of the farmstead courtyard and attached to the west end of a late 18th-century barn.

The south and east elevations facing the yard are weather-boarded, while the north range has earlier, more irregular weather-boards. The south range, which was originally open, now has a central entrance with a plank door, flanked by a pair of six-pane windows on each side. The north range also features a central entrance with a plank door on its south elevation. The rear and end walls of the south range are made of brick with piers, and the end wall displays a diamond pattern created with burned headers, topped by a hipped roof.

Inside, the cattleshed has a queen post and collar roof that supports a single row of purlins throughout. There are arched braces to the tie beam in the south range and arched braces to the wall posts on the yard elevation, where it was originally open to the yard. The rafters are connected by a ridge board.

This early 19th-century cattleshed has significant group value with the late 18th-century barns and early 18th-century stable within the farmstead.
