Description

Birch House is a house dating to the 17th century that was refronted in the 18th century and altered in the 20th century. It is constructed of vitreous and red brick laid in a diaper pattern above the upper windows, with an old tile gabled roof. The building has an irregular plan and two storeys, with chimneys at each end. The front façade features a brick string course, boxed wood eaves, and three small sash windows with glazing bars, except for a single-storey angular bay to the left of the ground floor. The central entrance has a half-glazed door with an architrave surround and a small corniced hood. Inside, a late 17th-century newel staircase has a moulded handrail and turned balusters on the first-floor landing. Certain ground-floor beams retain chamfers and run-out stops, and some thin framing is also present.
