Description
The mausoleum of the Hannen family, built between 1906 and 1907 by Sir Edwin Lutyens, is located 22 metres southwest of the Church of St. Mary in Wargrave. It is constructed of red brick with courses of red tiles and features stone details and a stepped tile roof. The building has a square plan and is a single storey. The entrance front includes a doorway flanked by stone-carved peacocks and a pierced iron door, with a carved swag above. Inside, there is a domed ceiling lined with ceramic slip tiles over four small brick barrel vaults. Below the dome, a semi-circular colonnade consists of six columns with moulded heads and bases, and a moulded frieze inscribed with "He Is Not The God Of The Dead But Of The Living For All Live Unto Him." Attached to the south side is a large former gardener's shed made of red brick, featuring a hipped tile roof and mullion windows. This shed was converted into Parish rooms in 1974 by Anthony Hickman and received a commendation in the Civic Trust Awards scheme in 1978.
