Description

The Wargrave War Memorial stands at the south end of the village green. It is a Portland stone war cross set atop an unusually high hexagonal plinth, the shape of which reflects the shaft's cross-section. The memorial is raised on a stepped base, consisting of four steps: the top three are shallow, with a deeper lowest step and a single block step at the front. Inscribed on the front (south) of the plinth are the words “Wargrave/ MCMXIV MCMXIX/ MCMXXXIX MXMXLV”. On the back (north) are inscribed “HER GLORIOUS DEAD/ MCMXIV MCMXIX/ MCMXXXIX MXMXLV”. The names of those who fell are inscribed around the base of the cross. Two later stone tablets, set into the ground at the front of the base, repeat the names inscribed on the memorial, with some additional names.
