Description

The Stag and Hounds Public House and adjoining cottage date back to the 17th century, with substantial alterations made in the early 19th century and the 20th century. The public house is a timber-framed building, although the original frame is now hidden behind a stucco exterior. It has a steep gable end roof covered in old tiles, with two flat-roofed dormers added in the 20th century and a large gabled pair of two-light windows with transoms, featuring 20th-century framing and casements. The ground floor displays a small, early 19th-century window, a door in an architrave surround, and a projecting, early 19th-century rectangular bay with three glazing bar sashes to the front, separated by fluted pilaster strips, and a later parapet. A flush-framed glazing bar sash and a 20th-century timber gabled porch are located to the left. The adjoining cottage to the west is an early 19th-century building constructed of painted brick with a rendered first floor, and has a low-pitched slate roof. It features three casements on the first floor, and single and coupled glazing bar flush framed sashes on the ground floor. There is a panelled and glazed door with a cornice hood supported on shaped brackets.
