Description
Adelaide Cottage, formerly known as Adelaide Lodge, is a significant building that incorporates part of John Nash's original Royal Lodge, which was built for the Prince Regent. It was re-erected in its current location in the Home Park, east of the Castle, in 1831. The cottage features one and two storeys, is situated on a banked site, and has a stucco facade adorned with elaborate pierced bargeboards. It includes drip moulds and casement windows. The south entrance front is flanked by paired diagonally set chimneys with stepped bases and features a porte cochere. The date is displayed in the gable, and the building has a slate roof along with a stepped weathered external chimney. The east side has a verandah with bargeboard eaves and glazing bars, as well as French casements. Inside, the principal bedroom boasts a coved ceiling decorated with gilded dolphins and rope ornamentation that has been reused from the Royal yacht "Royal George," along with a notable marble Graeco-Egyptian fireplace. The overall design is picturesque.
