Description

The Old Bridge House is a 19th-century building that fronts an earlier timber-framed house, which is reputed to have been built in 1558. The exterior features whitewashed pebbledash with a parapet and a hipped roof covered in old tiles. The house has two storeys and includes three casement windows with wooden transoms. The south front, located on the right side, has a segmental bow with a first-floor cast-iron balcony. The wooden doorcase is adorned with narrow panelled pilasters and an entablature that features a dentil and modillion cornice. The upper half of the door is glazed with glazing bars, while the lower half consists of two flush panels.

Notably, the south front has an unusual three-centred arched doorway with a "Gothic" fanlight and a surround made of clustered half columns, topped with a cornice that has a fan and pendant motif inspired by vaulting, along with an open dentil pediment. There is a wooden band between the fanlight and the door that is fluted and decorated with quatrefoils at intervals. Additionally, two dormer windows are set behind wooden balustraded panels in the parapet.

Inside, the house features a hall-like room at the rear that incorporates earlier timber beams and carved bosses, which are now used as brackets. There is a large open stone fireplace with a chamfered oak beam above it. The original door to this room has linenfold panels and is likely in its original position. The dining room includes a simple reeded frieze, while the first-floor bedroom showcases late 18th-century timber panelling in a French design and a stone fireplace from the same period.
