Description
The building is a school cloister located approximately 50 metres to the north of the gatehouse at Douai School. It was constructed between 1884 and 1888 by F.A. Walters in a Free Tudor-Gothic style, with an additional top storey added around 1910 to the left wing. The structure is made of red brick with stone dressings, featuring a plinth and string courses at the cill levels. The roof is tiled and has a central ridge stack, with a gabled dormer to the left that contains casement windows. To the right, there is a belfry adorned with two string courses, a battlemented parapet, and a clock on the east side, which has a hoodmould. The north side features a louvred arch with a hoodmould.
The east front of the building has two storeys and an attic, consisting of 12 bays with leaded windows that have two arched lights in square heads and returned hoodmoulds. There is a doorway in the third bay from the left with a 4-centred arch and a returned hoodmould that has carved stops. In the sixth bay from the left, there is another doorway with a moulded 4-centred arch in a square head, flanked by one-light windows, and a returned hoodmould with carved stops.
The left-hand wing is also made of red brick with stone dressings, featuring a plinth, string courses, and a coped parapet with stone corbelling. This wing has a tiled roof with four stacks and stands three storeys tall. The left-hand return wall has three bays, with cross windows on the first floor and arched two-light windows with square heads and returned hoodmoulds on the second floor. There is a doorway to the left with a 4-centred arch and a returned hoodmould. This building was originally constructed for St. Mary's College.
