Description

The gatehouse and flanking blocks were built in 1893-5 as part of the former Douai School, designed by F A Walters in a neo-Gothic style. The buildings are constructed of red brick with Bath stone dressings, featuring a plinth, corbel table, and a coped, battlemented parapet. The roof is not visible.

The gatehouse tower is three storeys high. Windows on the first and second floors have two cusped lights, with the second-floor windows being arched and hooded. Flanking these windows are two canopied niches containing figures. A central, moulded four-centered archway has a hoodmould, and carved coats of arms are positioned above it on either side. Short brick walls project from each side of the gatehouse, incorporating stone coping, square piers, finials topped with carved coats of arms, and lamps.

The left-hand block has a brick cill course and a tiled roof with a central ridge stack. A parapetted, gabled semi-dormer is situated to the left. The block is two and a half storeys high, with three two-light windows on each floor. A first-floor window to the left has a four-centered arched shape with a transom and Y-tracery.

The right-hand block is also of red brick with cill courses, and has a tiled roof with two gables featuring planted timbers and casements. It is two storeys high with an attic. Two canted bays rise to the first floor, each with a coped parapet and mullioned, transomed windows. Originally, these buildings were constructed for St. Mary's College.
