Description
The Bear Hotel is a hotel located on Charnham Street in Hungerford. It dates from the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, with a possibly older core. The building features a tiled, hipped roof and has two ridge chimneys on the main block. It is constructed of painted brick and has two storeys plus an attic.
The elevation facing Charnham Street includes a two-storey canted bay with vertical sliding sash windows and glazing bars at each end. On the first floor, there are seven vertical sliding sash windows with glazing bars, along with three small gabled dormers positioned centrally. The ground floor has a service door to the left, two sash windows, and a main door that is set beneath a 20th-century stucco porch, which is supported by two Doric columns and features a broken pediment. To the right, there are four additional sash windows.
Historically, the hotel served as the headquarters of Charles I in November 1644, and on December 8th, 1688, William of Orange received commissioners of James II here.
