Description
The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a Grade I listed building located in Lambourn. Originally built as a late Norman cruciform church, it features chapels from the 14th, 15th, and early 16th centuries on the north and south sides of the chancel. The exterior is rendered on flint and sarsen stone, with Taynton stone dressings and slate roofs.
The church has a four-bay nave with aisles and a clerestory. The arcades are supported by plain columns with semi-circular arches and fluted or leaf capitals. There are later pointed arches at the crossing, and a Norman doorway is located at the west end.
At the crossing, there is a tower with lower stages from the Norman period, while the upper stages date from the 14th and late 15th centuries. A notable feature is the arch leading to St Mary's Chapel from the south transept, which is adorned with a carving of a hunt with hounds pursuing a hare.
To the south of St Mary's Chapel is the early 16th-century chapel of the Holy Trinity, which contains an altar tomb for John Estbury, who died in 1508. The Essex Chapel, located to the north of the chancel, features a tomb with two recumbent figures of Sir Thomas and Margaret Essex, dated 1588. Additionally, the north wall of the chancel displays a late 16th-century carved stone memorial to Thomas Garrard and his wife.
